We all do it. It is natural to compare ourselves with others, and sometimes a little competition provokes motivation, but sometimes comparing our abilities to others can sabotage our success. Worrying about what others are doing is only going to distract you from focusing on bettering yourself.
When you compare yourself to others: Your comparison is not valid because EVERY BODY is different.
The only logical comparison you can make is with yourself. Just like in a science experiment when you compare two things there is always going to be variables that hinder the results. Because everyone is different, there are too many variables to accurately compare the success of two individuals. These variables (genetics, environment we live in, body composition etc.) all make us different and unique individuals. When you focus on being a better you, there are no variables and you know exactly what YOU have to do for YOU to succeed.
When you compare yourself to others: You are setting the bar low
You are missing out on the opportunity to be the best you can be because you are too busy trying to be better than someone else. Don’t stride to be better than someone else because you will oversee your own capabilities and they could be beyond what you thought was possible. If you compete with yourself instead, your bar will be set high because there is always going to be room for improvement. Don’t settle for being “as good as them” because you could be a greater you.
When you compare yourself to others: You are creating an excuse for your own efforts.
It is an excuse to justify your actions. “I’m never going to be as good as he/she so why should I even try.” It is a pity way of thinking that will only discourage you from progressing. You will excuse yourself from pushing harder because in the back of your head you’ve already convinced yourself that he/she is going to beat you. If you compete with yourself then there are no excuses because what you put in is what you’re going to get. There is no pre-expectation that can excuse you from doing your best.
When you compare yourself to others: You will never win.
There will always be something that someone else is better at than you. That’s just the way life is and we all have our strengths and weaknesses. If you are going to spend your life trying to beat out everyone you are setting yourself up for failure. Why put yourself through the discouragement? If you focus on your own strengths, weaknesses and goals, you will always win because every day is the chance to be a better version of yourself.
“Try not to get lost in comparing yourself to others. Discover your gifts and let them shine!”
