Thirsty Thursday: Enjoy yourself without packing on pounds!

Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram and is considered empty calories. There is no nutritional value in alcohol and in excess can lead to those extra unwanted pounds. Drinks can add up in calories, and cause you to over eat after a night out with your friends! Now I am not saying you have to stop drinking all together but it is important to keep drinking in moderation in order to maintain or lose weight. We can still enjoy ourselves without going overboard!

A standard serving of alcohol contains about 100 calories. A serving of alcohol is equivalent to:

12 oz. of beer

8 oz. of malt liquor

5 oz. of wine

1.5 oz. a “shot” of 80-proof distilled spirits or liquor (gin, rum, vodka, whiskey)

Myth: Limiting your food calories to drink will prevent weight gain.

Truth: You are more likely to munch on the snacks after drinking, and drinking on an empty stomach enhances the negative effects of alcohol. If you’re planning on drinking later, eat a healthy meal first. You’ll feel fuller, which will stop you from overdrinking. If you are worried about a full night out with friends, make some time for exercise- instead of skipping a meal.

Alcohol increases appetite and chances are when you get back from a night of drinking you’re going to go right to the pantry for a late night snack. For me, my typical go-to food is pizza from dominos (they deliver till 2 am) This food is easy to access, cheap, and satisfying. Pizza can be greasy and eating before sleeping (or passing out) means your body has to digest and break down all that cheese and dough not to mention all of that alcohol you drank that night.

How many of you have woken up the next day thinking why did I eat that?? When you are under the influence of alcohol, our chances of making good decisions are greatly decreased. Of course at the time it seems like a great idea, but the next day you beat yourself up.

Tip: Think ahead! Prepare a snack for when you get back from a night out. You can even prepare your OWN dominos pizza.

 Recipe: Dominos substitute Pizza

Ingredients:

–     1 whole wheat English muffin

–     ¼ cup Hunts crushed tomato’s or tomato sauce

–     12 slices of turkey pepperoni

–     ¼ cup low fat mozzarella cheese

(Bake in oven for 5-10 minutes/until crispy)

Total calories: 230 calories

Instead of…

1 slice pepperoni pizza from dominos: 325 calories

You save 100 calories for the same portion of pizza, and who are you kidding, you wont have just ONE slice!! You can have 2 whole English muffin pizzas for less then 1-½ slices of dominos pizza and a quarter the cost.

Other Snacks to choose after a night of drinking:

–     100 calorie popcorn individual bags

–     Trail mix (perfect combo of salty and sweet!)

–     Apples dipped in peanut butter

–     Peanut butter and small bananna

–     Hummus and wheat thins

–     Pretzels and laughing cow cheese

–     Ants on a log (celery, peanut butter and raisons)

Bottom line: If its there, you will eat it! Keeping unhealthy foods and snacks in your house creates an excuse for you to eat unhealthy. Chips, cookies, crackers, doughnuts, chocolate, and other unhealthy snacks all go straight to your body (for me my arse!) in the form of fat. So fill up your pantry with healthy snacks so you will only have smart choices to choose from!!
