1. You are literally breaking a fast. While you sleep your body is taking a break from digesting food. Eating as soon as you wake up alerts your metabolism that it is time to start working and burning calories. The process of digesting your food burns calories so it is beneficial to start that process as soon as you get out of bed!
2. Skipping out on breakfast makes you more likely to overeat at your next meal. Several studies suggest that people tend to accumulate more body fat when they eat fewer, larger meals than when they eat the same number of calories in smaller, more frequent meals (mayoclinic). Your body likes to to be in equillibrium so if you overload on calories in one sitting your body wont be able to metabolize it efficiently.
3. Eating breakfast puts you in a better mood because you will have a lot more energy. When your blood sugar is low you feel sluggish and tired putting you in a bad mood. Also when you are tired you are more likely to give into your cravings, especially sweets. Eating breakfast keeps your blood sugar stable and overall will make you feel better.
So what should you eat for breakfast? My favorite breakfast food is 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1 tbsp. peanut butter (240 calories). If you are a coffee person, instead of getting cream, get your coffee black and then add a half cup of pre-made vanilla protein shake (you can get them at GNC). It will provide you with protein and the nutrients you need to start the day off right!
