Anyone can tell you what to do. You can hire a personal trainer to create your workouts or a dietitian to make you a meal plan. And yes you may be successful while you have the time with them, but realistically they won’t always be there to guide you. What happens when you are sent off on your own? The only way we will ever continue to practice what we are told to do is if we learn it. Its the same principle with dieting. While you are following a diet, yes you will lose weight, but what happens when you stop the diet? Chances are you will gain everything back plus more. Why? Because you have no guidance to tell you what to do anymore, you didn’t learn how to eat properly, you just followed what the diet told you to do. The only way we will ever conquer obesity, make life style changes and make better choices is if we are educated. We need to teach people through explanation. You may know whole wheat bread is better then white bread, but do you know why? Whole wheat breads contain all parts of the grain kernel that provides us with fiber, essential fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, and zinc. White bread has the fiber-dense bran and the nutrient-rich germ processed out, providing us with limited nutrients. If we know WHY we are doing something it gives us more of an incentive to do it. Same thing goes for exercising. Why do we need cardio or resistance training? Ive asked my clients that question and the common response is: to lose weight and be healthy. Yes thats certainly true but it goes much deeper than that. What I am trying to preach is that we need to do a lot more teaching and a lot less telling. If we ever want to make a bigger stride towards being healthier we need to learn how to.
